In Tulum I found a very relaxing place, which I enjoyed for quite some days. Reading, writing, laying in the hammock, watching satellite tv and doing some laundry.
Wicked white sanded beaches and green sea water. Well, it is blue of course, but it looks green because of the white sand that's beneath it. The ruins were disappointing, was it not for its beautiful setting here right at the beach overlooking the sea. In the evenings I had a great time with a lot of other travelers, enjoyed the barbeque and met quite a few old friends from Guatemala who were also still on the road.
I dived the famous cennotes, which are 'open' caves. The first one, the grand cennote, was wicked. An underwater cave with some great stalagmites and some narrow openings. When coming back at the opening, there where the sunlight was, it was like entering solar space. It was like flying to some kind of star. The second one was less interesting stalagmite wise, but looked more like a real cave with such strange looking grilly shapes of rocks. Like walking around the moon. And it had as a bonus a separation between sweet cold water and salt warm water. The separation looked like a blanked of strange huge kind of particles which blurred your vision like looking through glasses much too strong. When raising your arm it was like entering your arm through some kind of mirror to another world. Cold at your hands, warm at the rest and you are very happy to be still swimming in the warm salt water. But I had to go up some time, so when it was time to dive more shallow, I was shocked by the cold water. My guide was very strict. He had a very long briefing about cavern versus caves and about extra security like two tanks and a yellow line for directions. People seem to die every year in their attempt to map and explore the region.
