Activities around San Christobal

Date: Sunday 22 May 2005 - Wednesday 25 May 2005
Temperature: 15-30 °C
Weather: Clouds and sun are fighting which one is going to win it

The first day in San Christobal (SC) we had to do some necessary things like washing clothes, checking email and sending postcards. At the hotel, Brigitte was mad at the owner, because she didn't get one bucket of hot water for washing clothes. And the reason, fear that the other customers didn't have hot water anymore for a shower. Brigitte fixed that problem by taking an extra long shower and she brought the clothes to a laundry, which always has the risk of not knowing in what color and what size they will return. But everything went fine and we had a quiet evening because of my stomach which was shouting and playing tricks.

Monday we visited the Sumideron canyon with 800 meter high cliffs towering above us, being transported in a fast motorboat. We saw many birds, some crocodiles (one closer than two meters), monkeys and vultures. There were some great rock formations on the way and a land formation which was called a Christmas tree, guess why! The village Chiapa de Gorza was not so interesting and we finished the tour with a great lookout point on the way back to SC. There we made a great salad with the traveling kit with a knife, fork and spoon which Brigitte had given me for my birthday. In the evening we went to a bar listening to life music.

On Tuesday, Brigitte had finally convinced me of taking a horseback ride to one of the villages in the mountains. It was great! I was sitting on a big white beauty, we went through some spectacular scenery (not foggy this time) and visited the church and market in the village. The church was spectacular, because inside it was used as a kind of stable, with hay inside it. Many people where praying and setting up many candles. Pretty risky on all that dry hay. My horse knew not to listen to me, it was like an attraction park ride, I am sitting on the horse and the horse runs around and follows the rest. Because I was the only one without experience, all the other wanted to go fast and what did my horse. It followed. Gallop was nice and fun, much more relaxing than trotts and walking speed was the most relaxed. At one time I almost fell of. Someone had dropped a sweater and the horse had to move sideways. Normally you look way ahead of yourself and see this coming, but I was so focused on the horse that I saw it almost too late. It was like driving a car for the first time. Next day I had two big blisters on my ass, learning me that I have to create some more flesh and tie a sweater around my bum like a diper the next time I ride on a horse.

On our way to Guatemala, we wanted to visit Aqua Azul, Misol Ha and Palenque. So we decided to take a tour. Agua Azul were very nice blue terraces of water, where you could swim in. Misol Ha was a big waterfall, the film scene for predator, and Palenque was an area with some nice Mayan ruins. Not particular beautiful because of its ruins, but the setting in the middle of the rainforest was amazing.
