From Antigua to Monterrico,
I took the way through San Jose and saw some beautiful beach villages on the way. People walking around in shorts, wearing no shirts and having houses of wood. When I checked in at Johnnies in Monterrico, the hammock was ready, cocktails were made and once again I enjoyed mother natures force. The waves here were so powerful and big, that I was afraid of going in. I don't get scared that quickly but the size of these waves gave me a thrill comparative with my bungee jump. The local kids taught me how to surf them. The trick is to ride on top and then make a backward turn just before they crush in, so that the wave will not suck you under for a long period of time. Afterwards, I think it was pretty risky, with waves three or four meters high, but it was so much fun. And off course no lifeguards, do what you want but be careful. I joined a tour guide through the mangroves and saw very interesting birds which were becoming very common later on in this trip.
First I had to get money, which cost me a day of taking buses and asking for directions and whether they would fix their ATM. I read and enjoyed the beach and waves. I talked with locals, other travelers, slept great at night with the sound of waves on the background and on Monday I started a Spanish course for one week, four hours a day. And for the rest, guess what, eating mangos for almost nothing, saw a 90 percent solar eclipse, wrote my diary, read my email and tried to study at a table overlooking the sea. I ate fish bigger than my plate and drank cocktails of three quarter of a liter. And all this cost less than my rent back home.
