Flores and Tikal

Date: Thursday 26 May 2005 - Friday 27 May 2005
Temperature: 25-30 °C
Weather: Clouds and sun are fighting which one is going to win it

We got tricked a bit at the border, what else is new! It started with the bus ride which was supposed to bring us all the way to the border, but it dropped us at an intersection and forced us to take a cab. Brigitte and some other travelers didn't get their passports stamped and had to go back a bit. No problems so far. Than the boat operators lied to us that their is no immigration office at La Technica, the nearest village across the river in Guatemala. So they forced us to take a longer boat ride, which was quite nice actually, to La Mesilla. There his friend the bus driver was waiting to bring us for extraordinary prices all the way to Flores and there was nothing you could do about it, because we were in the middle of nowhere. Anyway, we got there and Flores turned out to be a nice, touristy but quiet village near the lake.

We did some swimming in the lake which is known to have crocodiles, more shopping for reasonable prices, and great food from which I ate too much one evening and had to lie down. Then on Friday we went to Tikal which was beautiful not 'only' because of the temples but because of the rainforest and our sport of spotting monkeys. In the morning we saw many species of birds like the toucan, woodpecker and other indefinable species of colored birds. And we saw monkeys jumping from tree to tree which we tried to follow through the forest, where we almost got lost. Brigitte just in time noticed that it wasn't a good idea to wander around this thick of tropical rainforest without a guide, compass and some food and water. Some of the very high temples got above the Forrest line and had 360 degrees views of nothing but forest, forest and forest.
