Caye Caulker and Corozal

Date: Saturday 28 May 2005 - Thursday 2 June 2005
Temperature: 25-35 °C
Weather: Sunny periods with only sun sun and more sun

Belize was wicked! Black people, descendants of African slaves, very very friendly, a bit more expensive but arriving on Caye Caulker was like arriving in paradise. White sand, not many beaches, but nice settings with coconut trees and boat ramps. Eating out is delicious with often some nice African life rasta music, remember the 'shaving cream' in stead of 'shit' song. In an open air bar near a sea swim through, we saw shrimps who could be picked up in your hands. We saw small fish eating the shrimps, bigger fish eating the small fish and a bit further out it was war between all the different inhabitants of the sea. Letting your legs to rest into the water was not without risks. We slept in a very nice but basic purple cabana, less than five meters from the sea. The water of the disgusting sulfur smelling shower, dropped in a hole beneath us. But the place was worth it. For the rest we did some windsurfing, which was harder than expected and some romantic kayaking for sunset. Sunset is something we have tried to see many times, but unfortunately we failed in each attempt. On Wednesday, we made it just in time for Brigitte's plane back to MC from Chetumal, Mexico.

Here Brigitte finished her PADI open water course and we did one dive together. The local reef we dived on together was a bit disappointing, but it was fun to see her struggle with her buoyancy and how she wasted her air, reminding me of all my difficulties some years ago. Another dive I did was the blue hole which was without doubts extremely spectacular. After a very long and rough boat ride, which passed some great white sand islands, we arrived at a cave which collapsed tens of years ago. We went down to forty plus meters where some huge stalagmites remained. When looking down it is pitch-black and the wall doesn't end for the next 150 meter. On our way up, first we were surrounded by bull sharks. It was like they were waiting for one of the divers to be separated from the group as they do with normal prey. But I keep telling myself that they were only curious. Then big potato cods surrounded us and near the surface huge schools of yellow fin started to take interest in us. It was one of my best dives because of its simplicity. The other two dives I did here were nice as well, but I thought they looked like Honduras which isn't so weird of course. Nice coral, nice fish, but not as nice as Thailand and Australia. I saw one fish I never saw before which looked like coming from before the time of the dinosaurs. We had lunch on a small island where the red footed booby was the main inhabitant. Hundreds of them had their nests in the trees and completely ignored us.
