Mexico, Guatamala, Honduras and Belize
The people are very friendly, but I do see a big difference with Asian people. There, I am a sight, I am being treated as a king; people go out of their way to help me. Here, they see me more as an equal. They will help you, but similar as we would do when people ask us questions here in Holland. They are not as curious about us as they are in the East. Belize is an exception to this as are highland tribes. The black people in Belize are friendly and interested. I often felt ashamed when I ignored one of them, while he really only wanted to make a nice chat. Unfortunately the hill tribes are shy and it is very difficult to get invited there. Taxi drivers, moneychangers and touts are exceptions to the rule of course, my top three of most annoying types of persons.
The food is good. Tortilla based with all kinds of stuff to put on top of it. Themselves, they 'shovel' the stuff onto the tortilla and into their mouth. Tacos are great, but are a baked variant of tortillas. They have black beans called 'fricholes' with tortillas as their basic dish. Further more, enough burgers, tortas, hotdogs, fruits and licuados (milk shakes) to enjoy in full of the street. And it is never difficult to find a foreign kitchen.
The countries are very beautiful, very colorful, with Mexico at the top because it has everything. It has the beaches, the waterfalls, the mountains, the sea, the lakes, the culture and the wildlife. Caye Caulker, Belize was like arriving in paradise with its fantastic white beaches and great diving. Guatemala had great highland tribes and the waves at the Pacific Ocean are huge. Not to talk about the volcanoes, with the walk to active Pacaya topping my whole trip. I chased monkeys in the jungle, made photographs of the nicest colored birds and saw leguanas of half a meter. I saw crocodiles, flamingos and vultures. While diving, I spotted all kinds of beautiful colored fish, sharks, turtles and rays.
As a whole, it's a great place to go to, not too expensive with good accommodation, nice food and great things to do and see.
